How To... with Auto PAD Submit

Prepare your PADkit website

The default PADkit website has no ads or extensive graphics. If you have enhanced your PADkit website already, there is a good chance that you have placed ads and other graphics that will ultimately slow down your imports.

If your PADkit website is not yet published, or you are working on it locally, this section may be less relevant. If working on importing to a locally stored PADkit database, it is still recommended that you temporarily remove your advertisments and graphics because this will save you so much time. Working on a local php environment can sometimes cause timeouts to occur when you trying to display pictures from other domains (example: if you display the program's screenshot on the "addpad.php" page); this is due to protection enabled on their domain to protect their graphics resources. It is always just best to disable any graphics like this entirely during an import.

If your site is already opened to the public, you may want to just create duplicates of "checkadd.php" and "addpad.php" that the AutoPAD program will use. You would start off by saving a copy of "checkadd.php" as "checkautopad.php" and a copy of "addpad.php" as "addautopad.php". Then you will have to edit the "checkautopad.php" file to reference "addautopad.php" instead of "addpad.php". Next, edit out the ads - and anything else that will slow down "addautopad.php". Upload these new files to your web server (don't remove the initial files as they are still needed by your visitors!), and configure the AutoPAD program to use the new "checkautopad.php".

Basic Configuration

Here is an overview of the configuration that you will have to modify before running the program. At any point in time, you can make further changes to your configuration.

Before you run can really run the program, you have to make sure that the configuration settings are correct. Beyond configuring your website submit URL, some of the configuration values will require a working knowledge of some of the code behind your site.

Import New PAD XML Lists?

Here is a basic overview of how to import a new list of PAD file URLs into the program.

If your website is geared toward one specific type of software, you will want to include only those PADs that match your criteria. You can specify the types of PAD files you want when you do a search at Association of Shareware Professionals: PAD Repository. AutoPAD detects whenever the program's browser window contains a list of PAD files and these results will be automatically saved as a file. If your website is going to list all software categories, you can download PAD listings from the ASP repository site in the category "ALL", but I find that it makes more sense to initially download separate files for each of their categories.

Either way, before you start importing from a gigantic list, it is good to split them into many smaller files to take advantage of the computer's ability to multi-task. If you decided to download the PAD listings in individual categories, you can easily see which window is importing what type of software.

Failed Submissions

Depending on how your configuration is set, you may catch a lot of PAD URLs in the failed submission lists. Many times, you will want to attempt these PADs at a later time. Simply save any failed lists that you want to try again - and use the program to import them later.
